Example 2: Boat Docks

Above are contact-print scans from 67, 645, 35mm for comparison.

Again, the T-Max 100 35mm is way behind the other three, which are fairly close. With the large section of sky in these prints, the T-Max 100 35mm was recognizably worst from several feet away due to the grain. That said, the scans make the T-Max 100 35mm look much further behind the others than it appears in the prints.

In these scans, the 67 negative seems to be a bit blurry. This could be shutter-induced vibration in the camera, but it was windy while taking this series of pictures. Due to the wind, I pulled down on the tripod column while making each exposure so it seems strange that only the 67 would be affected by camera shake.

Looking at the prints (not the scans), the TMX 645 produced the best print, with Techpan 35mm and TMX 67 tied for second. The Techpan 35mm print looks sharpest of all four, but doesn't have as much detail as the medium format prints. The 67 print is somewhat blurry, but you have to look very closely to tell.

I asked five of my students to rank them in order of image quality, focussing specifically on sharpness and detail. I averaged the students' rankings for each one. TMX 645 was first with 1.8/4, TMX 67 was 2.2/4, Techpan 35mm was 2.4/4, and TMX 35mm was last with 3.6/4.
